After one of our
beloved cats died in February of 2000, due to complications of
diabetes, we started a fund in her name, Rider. (Please don't
let your cat get over weight. It is very harmful to your cat's health!)
Rider's Needy Cat Fund is a 501(c)(3)
non-profit organization that helps to provide shelter, medical
care and nurturing for cats in need by utilizing a relationship
with The Cat Doctor. Rider's Needy Cat Fund helps support other
animal welfare organizations, treat and temporarily house
injured stray cats, assist owners who have to choose euthanasia
over treatment due to financial hardship, and contribute to
local and national animal crisis.
100% of your donation helps cats in need.
You may donate at The Cat Doctor at 9151 Ustick Road in Boise,
ID 83704 or at Boise Cycle, LLC .

(click

In 1989 Rider and her 3 siblings were born to a stray cat on our
property. We cared for the Momma and kittens. The weather was
getting cold so we set up a place for them in our living room in our
tiny mobile home. We were able to tame and socialize them all.
We had the Momma cat spayed and she was adopted by a neighbor of
ours. When the kittens were ready for adoption, we decided we would
keep the last one, regardless of which one it was. There were 3 long
haired gray and white kittens and then, Rider, short hair black and
white.
She was very special and we just knew she would be the first one
picked............but every time someone came over to pick a kitten,
she would immediately act like a crazy cat. She would beat up the
other kittens, climb the curtains and even jump on the pant leg of
the adopter, digging her claws in and climbing up their leg. Keep in
mind, this was not her normal personality. Of course nobody adopted
her. It only took a couple times of this behavior for us to realize
she knew exactly what she was doing. She wanted to stay with us.
And she did. Looking back on her life, we learned a lot and wish we
could go back and change it. The poor quality food, the over eating,
the obesity and then Diabetes. Her blood sugar levels were out of
control. She was urinating huge puddles of sticky urine and couldn't
get to the litter box.
We started her on Insulin twice a day but never got the Diabetes
under control. She went down hill and her quality of life was not
good. It was extremely difficult, but we had to euthanize her.
We just didn't have the knowledge we have today.
We can't change the past, but we can learn by it and feed the proper
amount of good quality food and monitor our cat's health with annual
visits to the Vet.
Our over whelming sadness motivated us to do something in Rider's
Memory to help other cats. Our love for cats and the will to help
all those we can, makes Rider's Memory live on in all the cats lives
she has helped since her passing in 2000.

(A Poem to Homeless Cats)
Oh, what unhappy twist of fate
Has brought you homeless to my gate?
The gate where once another stood
To beg for shelter, warmth, and food
For from that day I ceased to be
The master of my destiny.
While he, with purr and velvet paw
Became within my house the law.
He scratched the furniture and shed
And claimed the middle of my bed.
He ruled in arrogance and pride
And broke my heart the day he died.
So if you really think, oh Cat,
I'd willingly relive all that
Because you come forlorn and thin
Well...don't just stand there...Come on in!
...Francis Witham

Pet Ten Commandments |
1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. ANY separation
from you is likely to be painful.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment.
You have your work, your friends and your entertainment, but I have only
you.
5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand
your voice when you speak to me.
6. Be aware that, however you treat me, I will never forget it.
7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt
you, and yet I choose not to bite you.
8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if
something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food,
I have been in the sun too long or my heart might be getting old or
weak.
9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.
10. On the ultimate difficult journey, be with me please. Never say you
can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier
for me if you are there because I love you so.
Take a moment today to thank God for your pets. Enjoy and take good care
of them.
